Women's research notes

What researchers study PT-141 for in women

PT-141 is among the most extensively studied peptides in women's sexual health research, with phase 3 clinical trials in pre-menopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder leading to FDA approval of bremelanotide in 2019.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) research

The RECONNECT phase 3 program studied bremelanotide in pre-menopausal women diagnosed with HSDD, with co-primary endpoints measuring desire and distress. Published trials reported statistically significant improvements versus placebo across both endpoints.

Central vs vascular mechanism

Unlike PDE5 inhibitors that act on vascular pathways, PT-141 acts centrally on melanocortin receptors (notably MC4R) implicated in sexual desire circuits. This mechanism makes it a frequent reference compound in female sexual response research, where vascular-only approaches have shown limited efficacy.

Post-menopausal & broader cohorts

Research has extended into post-menopausal cohorts and exploratory work on arousal disorder subtypes. Pre-clinical female models continue to map melanocortin signaling across the hypothalamic circuits involved in sexual motivation.
